Blackberry Whiskey Fizz Cocktail Recipe
This blackberry whiskey fizz is one of my favorite summer drinks.
I love how the fresh blackberries, mint, and lemon juice make a simple whiskey cocktail taste light and fruity.
Equipment
- Cocktail shaker (for mixing all the flavors together)
- Muddler (to mash the blackberries and mint)
- Fine mesh strainer (for straining out the pulp and seeds)
- Jigger or measuring spoons (for accurate pours)
- Highball glass or champagne flute (to serve the drink in style)
- Bar spoon (for stirring)
- Ice crusher or freezer bag and mallet (for crushed ice)
- Small plate (for rimming the glass with sugar if desired)
I always make sure I have these tools ready before I start.
Ingredients
- 2 oz blackberry whiskey (or blackberry bourbon for extra depth)
- 1 oz fresh lemon juice (or lime juice if I prefer a tart twist)
- 1 oz simple syrup (for sweetness)
- 6 fresh blackberries (plus extra for garnishes)
- 2-3 fresh mint leaves (to add aroma)
- Club soda, sparkling water, or ginger ale (to top off and add fizz)
- Crushed ice (for chilling and dilution)
- Optional: ginger beer (for a spicy note)
- Lemon or lime wheel (for garnish)
- Extra mint sprig (for garnish)
Each ingredient gives the cocktail a fresh, fruity flavor and a pretty look.
Instructions
- Add blackberries and mint leaves to the cocktail shaker.
- Muddle until the blackberries are well broken up and the mint is fragrant.
- Pour in the blackberry whiskey, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup.
- Fill the shaker with ice and cover tightly.
- Shake for 15-20 seconds to mix and chill.
- Strain the mixture into a highball glass (or champagne flute) filled with crushed ice.
- Top off with club soda, sparkling water, or ginger ale.
- Stir gently with a bar spoon.
- Garnish with fresh blackberries, a mint sprig, and a lemon wheel.
I find it’s best to add the club soda last so it stays fizzy.
Notes
I sometimes use store-bought blackberry bourbon or infuse my own.
Fresh blackberries always taste best, especially in the summer.
If I want a sweeter taste, I use a little extra simple syrup or try honey.
For a different flavor, ginger beer makes it a little spicy, while sparkling water keeps it light.
It’s easy to swap in lime juice for lemon juice if I run out.
Rimming the glass with sugar before pouring helps add a fun touch and more sweetness.
If I don’t have a cocktail shaker, a large mason jar works, too.
If I have kids around, I make a non-alcoholic version with just berries, mint, lemon, club soda, and simple syrup.
Equipment
- Cocktail shaker
- Muddler
- Fine-mesh strainer
- Jigger or measuring spoons
- Highball glass or champagne flute

- Crushed ice enough to fill glass
- 1 lemon wheel for garnish
- 1 mint sprig for garnish
Instructions
- Add fresh blackberries and mint leaves to a cocktail shaker.
- Muddle gently until the berries are broken down and the mint is fragrant.
- Add blackberry whiskey, lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker.
- Fill the shaker with ice and shake for 15–20 seconds.

- Top off with club soda, sparkling water, or ginger ale.

- Garnish with a lemon wheel, fresh blackberries, and a mint sprig.
- Serve immediately while fizzy and cold.
Tasting Notes
When I take my first sip, I notice the sweet-tart balance from the fresh blackberries.
The fruit gives a natural berry flavor that stands out, making the drink taste lively.
The whiskey adds a smooth warmth.
It blends nicely with the fizz, so it doesn’t overpower the fruit.
I also appreciate the vibrant color of the cocktail.
The deep purple-red shade makes it look inviting in a glass.
This drink feels perfect as a summer sip.
The bubbles make it extra refreshing, especially on a warm day.
If you like fruity cocktails but still want to taste the whiskey, this is a good choice.
I think it works both as a fun party drink and an easy way to enjoy something new at home.

Substitute
Sometimes I don’t have fresh blackberries on hand. I’ll grab frozen blackberries or even a spoonful of blackberry preserves instead.
Both options mix right in and keep the cocktail’s fruity kick. You honestly can’t go wrong.
If I’m out of whiskey, I’ll swap in bourbon or rye. Sometimes I’ll even reach for dark rum if I’m feeling adventurous.
Here’s a quick list of swaps I’ve tried:
- Whiskey: Bourbon, rye, or even dark rum
- Blackberries: Frozen berries, berry preserves, or blackberry syrup
- Lemon juice: Lime juice or a splash of orange juice
- Simple syrup: Honey, agave, or maple syrup
For brunch, I’ll sometimes pour in a bit of sparkling wine instead of club soda. Suddenly, it’s a party drink.
If I’m after a deeper flavor, I’ll use blackberry brandy in place of the fresh berries and regular whiskey.
When I’m making drinks for friends who’d rather skip the booze, I just leave out the whiskey. The fruit, lemon, and soda alone are sweet and bubbly—honestly, perfect for a summer brunch.
