Matcha and mojitos are two drinks I enjoy on their own, so I decided to try them together.
This Matcha Mojito Cocktail blends the fresh taste of mint with the smooth flavor of matcha for a drink that’s both unique and easy to make.
I like how the matcha powder adds a gentle earthy flavor, while the lime and mint offer cool, bright notes.
The cocktail is refreshing and different from a classic mojito, but it still keeps the familiar twist of lime and bubbly soda water.
Equipment
- To make a Matcha Mojito, I use a muddler, cocktail shaker, and strainer.
- The muddler helps crush the mint leaves and lime wedges. If I don’t have a muddler, the back of a wooden spoon is honestly just fine.
- I use a measuring jigger or a small measuring cup for the liquid parts.
- A tall glass, like a highball or Collins glass, works best for serving. For stirring, a long spoon is helpful.
- A fine mesh strainer helps remove mint bits or matcha lumps if needed.
Ingredients
My complete ingredient list looks like this:
- Matcha powder 1 tsp
- White rum 2 oz
- Simple syrup 0.5 oz
- Lime 1/2 cut in wedges
- Fresh mint leaves 8 leaves
- Club soda To top
- Ice cubes As needed
Instructions
- First, I put the lime wedges and mint leaves in the bottom of my glass or shaker.
- I muddle them gently to release the flavors but try not to crush the mint into tiny bits. Next, I add the simple syrup and white rum.
- In a separate small bowl, I whisk the matcha powder with a small amount of warm water until it is fully dissolved.
- This helps avoid clumps. Then, I pour this matcha mixture into the shaker or glass.
- I add ice cubes and shake well to chill and combine everything.
- If I’m using a shaker, I strain the drink into a tall glass filled with ice. I top up the drink with club soda and stir gently.
- I garnish the mojito with a mint sprig and a lime slice before serving.

Tasting Notes
When I taste a Matcha Mojito, the first thing I notice is the fresh mint.
The leaves give a cool, crisp scent and a clean finish. I can smell the lime too, which adds a bright, sharp note.
The taste is a mix of grassy matcha and zesty lime.
The green tea flavor is slightly earthy but not bitter. The lime juice brings a sour edge that wakes up my tongue.
I get a little sweetness from the sugar or simple syrup.
This helps balance the tart lime and strong matcha. The rum is present but not overpowering, giving a gentle warmth.
The drink feels smooth and lightly fizzy, thanks to soda water.
I find it easy to sip. The flavors are clear and simple, and nothing covers up the matcha.
After each sip, I notice the herbal taste from the mint and matcha lingers for a moment.
The lime gives a clean finish, making me want another taste.
Substitute
When I run out of matcha or just feel like experimenting, I’ll sometimes reach for green tea powder instead. It gives you that familiar green color, though the flavor’s a bit lighter and maybe not quite as bold.
If there’s no rum in the house, I’ll go with vodka or gin. Vodka keeps things light and pretty neutral, but gin brings in those botanical notes—sometimes that’s exactly what you want, sometimes not.
For sweeteners, if simple syrup’s missing, I’ll grab honey or agave. Each one changes the flavor a bit, for better or worse. Maple syrup? That’s a whole different vibe—unique, definitely worth a try if you’re curious.
Sometimes I’m out of fresh mint, so I’ll use dried mint or even a drop or two of mint extract. Just gotta be careful—those are way stronger, so I use less.
For a non-alcoholic version, I skip the rum and pour in a bit more sparkling water. Easy fix, and honestly, everyone can have some that way.
