Equipment

  • To make a Matcha Mojito, I use a muddler, cocktail shaker, and strainer.
  • The muddler helps crush the mint leaves and lime wedges. If I don't have a muddler, the back of a wooden spoon is honestly just fine.
  • I use a measuring jigger or a small measuring cup for the liquid parts.
  • A tall glass, like a highball or Collins glass, works best for serving. For stirring, a long spoon is helpful.
  • A fine mesh strainer helps remove mint bits or matcha lumps if needed.

Ingredients

My complete ingredient list looks like this:

  • Matcha powder 1 tsp
  • White rum 2 oz
  • Simple syrup 0.5 oz
  • Lime 1/2 cut in wedges
  • Fresh mint leaves 8 leaves
  • Club soda To top
  • Ice cubes As needed

Instructions

  • First, I put the lime wedges and mint leaves in the bottom of my glass or shaker.
  • I muddle them gently to release the flavors but try not to crush the mint into tiny bits. Next, I add the simple syrup and white rum.
  • In a separate small bowl, I whisk the matcha powder with a small amount of warm water until it is fully dissolved.
  • This helps avoid clumps. Then, I pour this matcha mixture into the shaker or glass.
  • I add ice cubes and shake well to chill and combine everything.
  • If I'm using a shaker, I strain the drink into a tall glass filled with ice. I top up the drink with club soda and stir gently.
  • I garnish the mojito with a mint sprig and a lime slice before serving.

Notes

Sometimes matcha just doesn't mix well and leaves lumps.
I always sift my matcha powder and mix it with warm, not hot, water to dissolve it better. Fresh mint gives the drink its best flavor, so I don't use dried mint.
I can adjust the amount of simple syrup based on how sweet I want my drink.
If I want a stronger matcha taste, I add a little more powder, but not more than 1.5 teaspoons, so the drink doesn't become too bitter.
If I do not drink alcohol, skipping the rum makes a refreshing matcha mocktail.
I serve the drink right after making it, as the mint and matcha both taste best when fresh.
