Halloween is honestly one of my favorite excuses for fun drinks and tasty treats. I’m always looking for ways to put a new spin on classic cocktails, especially when there’s a chance to make things a little spooky.
This year, my Rum Sour with a Halloween Twist is the drink I keep coming back to—it’s bold, festive, and just feels right for a party.
I’ve played around with all sorts of Halloween drinks—smoky Bloody Marys, sweet butterbeer, you name it. But honestly, this rum sour is hard to beat for simplicity and flavor.
Not into booze? No problem. You can totally make it into a mocktail, so everyone gets in on the fun.
All you need are a few basic ingredients and some simple bar gear. I love that it’s quick to mix up, leaving more time for costumes and, let’s be real, candy.
Rum Sour With A Halloween Twist Cocktail Recipe
This rum sour gets a spooky upgrade—perfect for Halloween. You get the flavors of dark rum, fresh citrus, and just a splash of grenadine for color.
It’s easy to throw together and looks pretty cool in a glass.
Equipment
- Cocktail shaker – I use this for shaking everything together.
- Jigger or shot glass – For measuring out your liquids.
- Strainer – Keeps out the ice and any bits.
- Highball or rocks glass – I like clear glass so the color pops.
- Bar spoon – Great for layering or stirring in ginger beer.
- Ice cubes – Essential for chilling.
- Small tongs – Handy for dry ice or those creepy garnishes.
Ingredients
- 2 oz dark rum or spiced rum
- 3/4 oz fresh lime juice
- 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
- 3/4 oz simple syrup or maple syrup
- 1/4 oz grenadine or cherry juice for color
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters (optional)
- 1 oz ginger beer (for some fizz, if you want)
- 1 egg white (classic for foam, but up to you)
- Ice cubes
- Garnishes: lychee, blueberries, maraschino cherry, or a bit of dry ice for drama
Instructions
- Pour the rum, lime juice, lemon juice, simple syrup, grenadine, and egg white (if using) into your shaker.
- Shake it without ice (“dry shake”) for about 20 seconds to get that egg white nice and frothy.
- Add ice, then shake again until it’s good and cold.
- Strain into a glass with fresh ice.
- Top with ginger beer if you want some bubbles.
- Drop in a cherry, or make a “spooky eyeball” by stuffing a lychee with a blueberry—always a hit.
- For real Halloween vibes, add a small piece of dry ice with tongs. Just wait for the smoke to settle before sipping.
Notes
A dark rum like Kraken or Captain Morgan Spiced Rum really gives it depth. If you want a deeper color, Chambord instead of grenadine is a fun swap.
Be careful with dry ice—never touch it bare-handed and don’t let anyone drink it. Egg white makes it frothy, but skip it if you want a vegan or lighter version.
Sometimes I use cherry juice instead of grenadine for a blood-red look. Oh, and if you’re making drinks for a crowd, just double everything.
I’ve even tried swapping lime for apple juice for a “poison apple” version, or adding blueberry syrup for a purple twist.

Tasting Notes
When I take a sip of this Rum Sour with a Halloween twist, the first thing that hits me is the citrusy punch. The lime gives it a sharp, tangy kick, and the orange liqueur (if you use it) is just enough to brighten things up.
The balance between sweet and sour is pretty much spot-on. Simple syrup brings in just enough sweetness, while the dark rum adds a cozy, almost spicy warmth.
The “Halloween twist” can be as simple as a dash of grenadine or a silly garnish. Sometimes I’ll toss in gummy worms or candy eyeballs for extra fun.
It’s a cool, refreshing drink with a clean finish and a lingering hint of lime. I honestly think anyone—kids-at-heart or actual adults—will get a kick out of these bright, playful flavors at a fall party.
