When the weather turns chilly, I find myself reaching for a Hot Toddy with cinnamon to warm up. This simple cocktail tastes great and, honestly, it helps soothe a sore throat or just helps me wind down after a long day.
A Hot Toddy with cinnamon is easy to make at home using a few basic ingredients you probably already have.
I want to share my go-to Hot Toddy recipe so you can try it, too. My version blends the warmth of whiskey, honey, and lemon with that cozy touch of cinnamon for extra comfort.
Read on for the equipment, ingredients, and step-by-step instructions.
Equipment
- Small saucepan: I use this to heat water and infuse spices.
- Measuring spoons and cups: These help me add the correct amount of each ingredient.
- Mug: My favorite sturdy mug works best for hot drinks.
- Stirring spoon: I use this to mix the drink well.
- Fine mesh strainer (optional): Sometimes I use a strainer if I want to remove the cinnamon stick or lemon pulp before serving.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 ounces whiskey bourbon or rye, but I sometimes use rum
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
- 2/3 cup hot water
- 1 cinnamon stick
- 1 lemon round or wedge for garnish
- 2-3 whole cloves optional, for extra flavor
- Pinch of ground cinnamon optional, for garnish
I always use fresh ingredients for the best flavor.
Instructions
- Heat water in a small saucepan until it begins to steam, but I make sure it doesn’t boil.
- Place the cinnamon stick in the mug and pour in the hot water. Let it steep for about 2 minutes.
- Remove the cinnamon stick and set it aside, or leave it in for a stronger flavor.
- Add whiskey, honey, and lemon juice to the mug.
- Stir the drink until the honey is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
- If I want extra spice, I add a few whole cloves before stirring.
- Garnish with a lemon round or wedge and a light sprinkle of ground cinnamon, if desired.
- I serve it hot and enjoy right away.

Tasting Notes
When I take the first sip of my Hot Toddy with Cinnamon, there’s this gentle warmth that spreads through my mouth. The mix of hot water and whiskey creates a soothing, smooth base.
The cinnamon adds a spicy touch. It’s not overpowering, but it gives the drink an inviting scent and a little extra heat on the tongue.
I can taste the lemon’s tang. Combined with a hint of honey, it balances the warmth with a bit of sweetness and sharpness.
I like how the aroma of cinnamon rises from the cup. It makes each sip feel cozy, especially on a cold day.
After swallowing, I sense a soft, lingering sweetness, followed by a hint of spice.
Substitute
Sometimes I run out of certain ingredients, or honestly, I just want to shake things up with my hot toddy.
Here are a few easy swaps I’ve tried that work pretty well.
Ingredients I can substitute:
- Lemon juice: I’ll use orange or even lime juice if I’m feeling adventurous.
- Honey: Maple syrup or agave step in when honey’s nowhere to be found.
- Whiskey: Sometimes I go with rum, brandy, or bourbon—depends on my mood, really.
Alternatives for cinnamon:
- If cinnamon sticks are out, 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon does the trick.
- Nutmeg or allspice can give a similar warmth, especially if cinnamon’s not around.
- For something a bit lighter, I’ll just toss in a strip of citrus peel instead.
Dairy additions:
If I’m craving something creamier, I’ll add a splash of milk or a non-dairy milk instead of water.
It makes the drink smooth, but still keeps that cozy vibe I love.
