Equipment

  • Small saucepan: I use this to heat water and infuse spices.
  • Measuring spoons and cups: These help me add the correct amount of each ingredient.
  • Mug: My favorite sturdy mug works best for hot drinks.
  • Stirring spoon: I use this to mix the drink well.
  • Fine mesh strainer (optional): Sometimes I use a strainer if I want to remove the cinnamon stick or lemon pulp before serving.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces whiskey bourbon or rye, but I sometimes use rum
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 2/3 cup hot water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 lemon round or wedge for garnish
  • 2-3 whole cloves optional, for extra flavor
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon optional, for garnish

I always use fresh ingredients for the best flavor.

Instructions

  • Heat water in a small saucepan until it begins to steam, but I make sure it doesn't boil.
  • Place the cinnamon stick in the mug and pour in the hot water. Let it steep for about 2 minutes.
  • Remove the cinnamon stick and set it aside, or leave it in for a stronger flavor.
  • Add whiskey, honey, and lemon juice to the mug.
  • Stir the drink until the honey is fully dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
  • If I want extra spice, I add a few whole cloves before stirring.
  • Garnish with a lemon round or wedge and a light sprinkle of ground cinnamon, if desired.
  • I serve it hot and enjoy right away.

Notes

I like to adjust the honey and lemon juice to match my taste. If I want a stronger or lighter drink, I just change the amount of whiskey or water.
Sometimes I use maple syrup instead of honey for a different kind of sweetness. I definitely prefer a cinnamon stick over ground cinnamon, since it gives flavor without that gritty texture.
If the drink's too hot, I let it cool a little before sipping. When making this for someone sensitive to alcohol, I add more hot water and less whiskey.
I also sometimes use herbal tea instead of plain water for extra aroma.
