Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Muddler
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Champagne flutes
  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp knife

Ingredients

  • 6 fresh strawberries hulled and quartered
  • 4-6 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 4 oz chilled champagne or prosecco
  • Ice cubes
  • Extra strawberries and basil for garnish

Fresh, ripe strawberries work best for this recipe. If strawberries aren't in season, frozen ones can be used instead. Choose fragrant basil leaves for the best flavor.

Instructions

  • Add strawberries, basil, and simple syrup to the cocktail shaker.
  • Muddle gently to release the flavors.
  • Pour in lemon juice and add ice.
  • Shake well for 10-15 seconds.
  • Strain the mixture into a champagne flute.
  • Top with chilled champagne or prosecco.
  • Stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish with a strawberry and basil leaf.
  • Serve the cocktail right away to enjoy the bubbles.

Be careful not to over-muddle the basil, as it can become bitter.

    Notes

This recipe makes one cocktail. To make a larger batch, simply multiply the ingredients. The strawberry-basil mixture can be prepared ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
For a non-alcoholic version, replace the champagne with sparkling water or lemon-lime soda. Adjust the sweetness to taste by adding more or less simple syrup.
Try different fruit and herb combinations like raspberry-mint or peach-thyme for variety.
