Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Citrus juicer
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Rocks glass
  • Ice

Ingredients

For one cocktail:

  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey
  • 1 oz fresh Meyer lemon juice
  • 3/4 oz simple syrup
  • Ice
  • Optional: 1 egg white
  • Garnish: Meyer lemon wheel and cocktail cherry

Meyer lemons are sweeter than regular lemons. They give the drink a unique flavor. Simple syrup is made by mixing equal parts sugar and water.

Instructions

  • Fill the cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Add bourbon, Meyer lemon juice, and simple syrup to the shaker.
  • If using, add the egg white.
  • Shake hard for 10-15 seconds.
  • Strain the mixture into a rocks glass filled with ice.
  • Garnish with a Meyer lemon wheel and cocktail cherry.

For a frothier texture, do a "dry shake" first. Shake all ingredients without ice, then add ice and shake again.

    Notes

Meyer lemons are in season from November to March. If you can't find them, use regular lemons instead. Just add a bit more simple syrup to balance the tartness.
For a non-alcoholic version, replace the bourbon with unsweetened iced tea. This creates a Meyer Lemon Tea Sour.
The egg white is optional. It adds a silky texture and frothy top to the drink. If you skip it, the cocktail will still taste great.
