Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Muddler (or wooden spoon as alternative)
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Ice cube tray
  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Measuring tools (jigger or measuring spoons)
  • Highball or collins glasses
  • Stirring spoon

Ingredients

  • 2 oz fresh lemon juice about 1-2 lemons
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • 8-10 fresh basil leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 4 oz soda water or sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon wheels for garnish

For the simple syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar

The quality of ingredients matters greatly in this recipe. Use freshly squeezed lemon juice rather than bottled for the best flavor.

Instructions

  • Make simple syrup (if needed): Combine water and sugar in a small pot. Heat over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Let cool completely.
  • Muddle the basil: Place basil leaves in the bottom of your shaker or jar. Gently muddle to release the oils and aroma without shredding the leaves.
  • Add wet ingredients: Pour in the lemon juice and simple syrup.
  • Shake with ice: Add ice to the shaker, secure the lid, and shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds.
  • Strain and serve: Strain the mixture into an ice-filled glass. Top with soda water.
  • Garnish: Add a lemon wheel and fresh basil leaf to the rim of the glass.
  • Stir gently before enjoying.

This mocktail is best served fresh. The recipe makes one serving but can be easily doubled or tripled for guests.

    Notes

This mocktail can be customized in several ways. For a sweeter drink, add more simple syrup. For a more herb-forward flavor, try adding extra basil or even mint.
For parties, prepare the lemon-basil mixture in advance (without ice or soda) and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. When ready to serve, simply strain into glasses with ice and top with soda water.
Those watching sugar intake can substitute the simple syrup with honey or agave nectar. Start with half the amount and adjust to taste.
The basil-lemon combination pairs well with light appetizers and summer meals. This drink is particularly refreshing during warm weather but can be enjoyed year-round.
