This Blueberry Moscow Mule uses fresh blueberries, ginger beer, and lime juice to create a fruity twist on a popular drink.

Equipment

  • A sturdy cocktail shaker is great for mixing the drink and breaking up the blueberries.
  • For measuring, I prefer a jigger, but a tablespoon works if you don’t have one.
  • A muddler or even the back of a spoon helps crush the berries in the shaker.
  • Copper mugs keep the drink chilled longer, but honestly, any glass works.
  • A fine mesh strainer removes blueberry skins for a smoother drink.
  • I also grab a long spoon for stirring the ginger beer in at the end.

Ingredients

I use a simple list:

  • 1/4 cup blueberries plus extra for garnish
  • 1.5 oz vodka
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup or more for extra sweetness
  • Ginger beer enough to top, about 1/2 cup
  • Ice cubes or crushed ice
  • Lime wheel or sprig of mint for garnish

I always wash the berries and roll the lime on the counter to get more juice.

Instructions

  • First, I add blueberries and simple syrup to the shaker. I muddle them until the berries are broken up and juices are released.
  • Next, I pour in vodka and lime juice.
  • I add ice, secure the lid, and shake hard for about 15 seconds.
  • Then, I strain the mixture into a copper mug or glass filled with ice.
  • I pour ginger beer on top and stir it gently.
  • I finish by adding whole blueberries, a slice of lime, or mint for garnish.
  • If I want a little extra pink color, I muddle a few extra berries with the syrup.

Notes

I find the best flavor comes from ripe, juicy blueberries and fresh lime juice.
Adjusting the amount of simple syrup can make the drink more or less sweet as needed.
If I want it less sweet, I cut back on syrup and use lime for more tartness.
Using ginger beer with strong, spicy flavor gives the drink the right kick. I avoid ginger ale, which is much milder.
Serving in a copper mug keeps the cocktail colder and tastes more traditional, but any sturdy glass works fine.
For a non-alcoholic version, I leave out the vodka and add more ginger beer.
The blueberry and lime flavor still come through well.
If making more than one, I muddle extra berries and mix in batches.
