Equipment

  • Tall glass or mason jar
  • Small saucepan
  • Fine mesh strainer or sieve
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Small bowl (for making syrup)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stirring spoon
  • Ice cube tray
  • Citrus juicer (optional)
  • Pitcher (if making multiple servings)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup fresh blueberries
  • 4-5 fresh basil leaves
  • 1 tablespoon honey or agave syrup
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup chilled sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Extra blueberries and basil for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Add blueberries, basil leaves, honey, lemon juice, and water into a small saucepan.
  • Heat on medium for 2-3 minutes until the berries soften.
  • Gently mash berries and basil with the back of a spoon while heating.
  • Remove from heat and pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer to catch solids. Press with a spoon to extract juice.
  • Let the syrup cool for at least 10 minutes.
  • Fill a glass with ice cubes.
  • Pour 2-3 tablespoons of the blueberry-basil syrup over the ice.
  • Top with sparkling water.
  • Stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish with extra basil leaves and blueberries, if desired.

Notes

Fresh ingredients make the spritzer taste brighter and more natural.
I can adjust the sweetness by adding more or less honey or agave. For a stronger herbal flavor, I muddle extra basil leaves in the glass before adding ice.
Leftover syrup stores in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Using flavored sparkling water, like lemon or berry, can add more taste.
If I want a different twist, I swap lemon juice for lime juice.
For serving a crowd, I multiply the syrup by two or three and keep it chilled until ready. The drink stays non-alcoholic, but the syrup also works in iced tea or lemonade.
I recommend tasting before adding extra syrup or lemon juice.
