Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Muddler (or wooden spoon as alternative)
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Jigger or measuring cups
  • Highball glasses
  • Ice cube tray
  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp knife

Ingredients

For 2 servings:

  • 1 cup mixed berries strawberries, blueberries, raspberries
  • 8-10 fresh basil leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 cup sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices for garnish

The quality of ingredients matters for this recipe. Use fresh berries when possible, though frozen berries work in a pinch.

Instructions

  • Wash the berries and basil leaves thoroughly.
  • Add berries, basil, honey, and lemon juice to the shaker or jar.
  • Muddle the ingredients gently to release flavors and juices. Don't over-muddle the basil or it may become bitter.
  • Fill the shaker halfway with ice and secure the lid.
  • Shake vigorously for 15-20 seconds until the outside of the shaker feels cold.
  • Strain the mixture into ice-filled glasses, filling them about halfway.
  • Top with sparkling water and stir gently.
  • Garnish with fresh basil leaves and lemon slices.

Serve immediately while cold and bubbly.

    Notes

This mocktail can be customized in many ways. Try using only strawberries for a sweeter drink, or blackberries for a deeper flavor. Mint can replace basil for a different herbal note.
For a make-ahead option, prepare the berry-basil mixture and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add the sparkling water just before serving to maintain the fizz.
The recipe works well for parties. Make a large batch of the base mixture and let guests add their own sparkling water and garnishes.
For a less sweet version, skip the honey or syrup and rely on the natural sweetness of the berries.
