I’m always looking for new spins on classic drinks, and honestly, the Matcha Mule has become a bit of an obsession for me.
This recipe brings together earthy matcha and the crisp, spicy punch of a Moscow Mule. The result? A cocktail that’s both easy to whip up and just different enough to turn some heads at your next get-together.
Every time I serve this, someone inevitably asks, “What’s in this?” It just looks so good—and yeah, somehow tastes even better.
If you like experimenting with familiar cocktails, you’ll see how surprisingly simple it is to make a Matcha Mule at home.

Tasting Notes
First sip? The matcha’s earthy smoothness jumps out, but it’s mellow, not grassy or overpowering. It’s kind of unexpected how well it plays with the sharp, fizzy ginger beer.
The taste sits right between sweet and a touch bitter. Lime brings a fresh tartness that just wakes everything up.
It’s light and fizzy, super refreshing, and not cloying at all. The ice and bubbles keep it crisp—almost dangerously easy to drink.
Flavor Highlights:
- Earthy matcha
- Spicy ginger
- Tart lime
- Hint of sweetness
Aromas:
It smells clean, with those grassy matcha notes front and center. There’s a sharp ginger kick, and a little hit of citrus from the lime.
The aftertaste hangs around in a good way—herbal, not harsh. Every sip brings the flavors together in a way that’s simple, but honestly, kind of addictive.
Substitute
Sometimes I don’t have all the usual ingredients for a Matcha Mule. So, I use substitutes to get a similar taste—or at least something close.
Ingredient Substitutes:
- Matcha powder: I’ll grab green tea powder if matcha’s out of reach. The flavor’s a bit milder, but it does the trick.
- Vodka: Gin, white rum, or even tequila can stand in. Each one gives the drink a new vibe.
- Ginger beer: If I’m out of ginger beer, I’ll mix ginger ale with some fresh grated ginger or a splash of ginger syrup. Not exactly the same, but honestly, it’s still tasty.
- Lime juice: Lemon juice works in a pinch for that tartness if I’ve run out of limes (which happens more than I’d like to admit).
Equipment Substitutes:
- Copper mug: No copper mug? I just use a regular glass. It’s fine.
- Cocktail shaker: Sometimes I shake things up in a mason jar with a lid. Or, I’ll just stir it fast in a glass if I’m feeling lazy.
- Sieve: No fancy sieve here—I usually sift the matcha powder with a tea strainer instead.
Instructions with Substitutes:
- Mix green tea powder or matcha with a splash of hot water until smooth.
- Fill a glass or mug with ice.
- Add my choice of vodka, gin, rum, or tequila.
- Pour in ginger beer, or use ginger ale with ginger syrup.
- Add lemon or lime juice.
- Stir well and garnish if desired.
