Equipment

  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Tall glasses (12-16 oz)
  • Cocktail shaker or large mixing glass
  • Ice cube tray
  • Straws
  • Stirring spoon

Ingredients

  • 4 large fresh oranges enough for 1 cup of juice
  • 1/2 lime juiced
  • 2 tablespoons simple syrup
  • 1 cup club soda or lemon-lime soda
  • 1 tablespoon grenadine optional for color and sweetness
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange slices and mint leaves for garnish
  • 1/4 teaspoon orange zest per drink

Use fresh oranges whenever possible for the best flavor. Valencia or navel oranges work particularly well.

Instructions

  • Wash all citrus fruits thoroughly under cool water.
  • Cut oranges in half and juice them until you have approximately 1 cup of fresh orange juice.
  • Add the orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until well chilled.
  • Fill tall glasses halfway with ice cubes.
  • Strain the juice mixture into the glasses, filling about 2/3 full.
  • Top each glass with club soda or lemon-lime soda.
  • Gently stir to combine all ingredients.
  • If using grenadine, slowly pour it down the inside of the glass to create a gradient effect.
  • Garnish with orange slices, mint leaves, and sprinkle with orange zest.

Notes

This recipe makes about 2 servings and can be easily doubled or tripled for a crowd.
For a sweeter version, use lemon-lime soda instead of club soda. The mocktail is best served immediately as the carbonation will diminish over time.
You can prepare the orange juice mixture in advance and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Just add the carbonated component right before serving.
For a party, create a self-serve station with the juice mixture in a pitcher and soda on the side.
This drink pairs wonderfully with spicy foods or as a brunch beverage.
Kids love this mocktail too - just reduce the zest if making for children who might find it too intense.
