Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or large mason jar with lid
  • Citrus juicer
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Measuring jigger or measuring spoons
  • Highball glasses
  • Ice cube tray
  • Peeler or zester for garnish
  • Cutting board and knife

Ingredients

For one serving:

  • 2 oz fresh orange juice about 1 medium orange
  • 1 oz ginger syrup recipe below
  • ½ oz fresh lemon juice
  • 4-5 oz soda water
  • Ice cubes
  • Orange wheel and candied ginger for garnish

For ginger syrup:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3- inch piece of fresh ginger peeled and thinly sliced

The quality of the orange juice makes a big difference. Fresh-squeezed juice provides the brightest flavor compared to store-bought options.

Instructions

To make ginger syrup:

  • Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan over medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves completely.
  • Add sliced ginger and bring to a simmer. Reduce heat and let simmer for 15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and let steep for 30 minutes.
  • Strain through a fine mesh strainer and store in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

To make the mocktail:

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Add orange juice, ginger syrup, and lemon juice to the shaker.
  • Shake vigorously for 15 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Strain into a highball glass filled with fresh ice.
  • Top with soda water and stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish with an orange wheel and a piece of candied ginger.

Notes

This mocktail can be prepared in advance (except for the soda water) and stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Add the soda water just before serving to maintain the fizz.
For a spicier version, add a few slices of fresh jalapeño to the shaker before mixing. Remove seeds for a milder heat.
The ginger syrup makes enough for approximately 8-10 drinks and can be used in other beverages like hot tea or lemonade.
For a sweeter drink, add an extra ½ oz of ginger syrup. For less sweetness, reduce the syrup to ½ oz and increase the lemon juice slightly.
