2ozwhite rumpreferably American-made
1ozfresh lime juice
¾ozsimple syrup
½ozblue curaçao
½ozgrenadine
Fresh strawberries3-4 berries
Fresh blueberriesfor garnish
Lime wheelfor garnish
Ice cubes
Instructions
Prepare the glass: Chill your serving glass by filling it with ice and water while you mix the cocktail.
Muddle the berries: Place strawberries in the bottom of your shaker and gently muddle to release juices—don’t go overboard and pulverize them.
Add liquid ingredients: Pour rum, lime juice, and simple syrup into the shaker.
Shake vigorously: Add ice to the shaker and shake for 15-20 seconds until everything’s nice and cold.
Layer the colors: Empty your chilled glass. Pour the strained mixture into the glass first.
Create the effect: Slowly pour blue curaçao down the side of the glass, then carefully layer grenadine at the bottom by pouring it over the back of a spoon.
Garnish: Add blueberries and a lime wheel for the final patriotic touch.
Notes
This cocktail works great for Fourth of July celebrations or any patriotic gathering. The flavor profile is tart, with a nice fruity sweetness. If you want a frozen version, just combine all the ingredients with about a cup of ice in a blender. Blend until smooth, then layer in the blue curaçao and grenadine.Need a non-alcoholic option? You can swap white grape juice for the rum and use a blue sports drink instead of curaçao. It’s not quite the same, but it’s still fun.Leftover simple syrup keeps in the fridge for up to a month. Fresh lime juice, though—use it within 24 hours for the best flavor. If you’re making a big batch, multiply the ingredients but mix right before serving. That way, you keep the layers and any fizz if you’re adding something sparkling.
