Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker with strainer
  • Jigger or measuring tool
  • Hawthorne strainer (if your shaker doesn't include one)
  • Fine mesh strainer (for double straining)
  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Hurricane glass or coupe glass
  • Ice cube tray (for regular ice)
  • Blender (only for frozen version)

Ingredients

For one Yankee Doodle Daiquiri, you'll need:

  • 2 oz white rum preferably American-made
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • ¾ oz simple syrup
  • ½ oz blue curaçao
  • ½ oz grenadine
  • Fresh strawberries 3-4 berries
  • Fresh blueberries for garnish
  • Lime wheel for garnish
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  • Prepare the glass: Chill your serving glass by filling it with ice and water while you mix the cocktail.
  • Muddle the berries: Place strawberries in the bottom of your shaker and gently muddle to release juices—don’t go overboard and pulverize them.
  • Add liquid ingredients: Pour rum, lime juice, and simple syrup into the shaker.
  • Shake vigorously: Add ice to the shaker and shake for 15-20 seconds until everything’s nice and cold.
  • Layer the colors: Empty your chilled glass. Pour the strained mixture into the glass first.
  • Create the effect: Slowly pour blue curaçao down the side of the glass, then carefully layer grenadine at the bottom by pouring it over the back of a spoon.
  • Garnish: Add blueberries and a lime wheel for the final patriotic touch.

Notes

This cocktail works great for Fourth of July celebrations or any patriotic gathering. The flavor profile is tart, with a nice fruity sweetness.
If you want a frozen version, just combine all the ingredients with about a cup of ice in a blender. Blend until smooth, then layer in the blue curaçao and grenadine.
Need a non-alcoholic option? You can swap white grape juice for the rum and use a blue sports drink instead of curaçao. It’s not quite the same, but it’s still fun.
Leftover simple syrup keeps in the fridge for up to a month. Fresh lime juice, though—use it within 24 hours for the best flavor.
If you’re making a big batch, multiply the ingredients but mix right before serving. That way, you keep the layers and any fizz if you’re adding something sparkling.
