This simple warm mulled wine brings together bold red wine, cozy spices, orange, and a touch of sweetness. Perfect for winter gatherings or cozy nights at home, it fills the kitchen with festive aroma and gentle warmth.
1bottlefull-bodied red winecabernet, merlot, zinfandel, pinot noir, or syrah
1orangeplus more for garnish
8-10whole cloves
3whole cinnamon sticks
2star anise
0.25cupbrown sugar, granulated sugar, or honeysweeten to taste
0.25cupbrandy, bourbon, or dark rumoptional
1-2tbspmaple syrup or fresh orange juiceoptional
10whole allspice berries
0.25tspgrated nutmeg

Instructions
Pour the wine into a large pot or slow cooker.
Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, allspice, nutmeg, and cardamom pods.
Slice the orange, squeeze in some juice, and add the slices to the pot.
Add brown sugar or honey to taste. Add cranberries and a splash of brandy or rum if desired.
Warm gently over low heat for 30–45 minutes. Do not let it boil.
Strain out the spices, fruit, and cranberries.
Ladle hot mulled wine into mugs. Garnish with a cinnamon stick or orange slice if desired.
Notes
Use a bold red wine that can stand up to the spices. Adjust sweetness as you like. Try cardamom or more orange for a different twist. Slow cooker keeps it warm for parties. Store leftovers in the fridge up to 3 days and reheat gently.
