Equipment

  • Small saucepan
  • Heatproof mug or cup
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Citrus juicer

Ingredients

  • 2 cups apple cider or apple juice
  • 1 tablespoon honey, agave nectar, or maple syrup
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 whole cloves
  • 1 star anise optional
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • lemon slices for garnish
  • ground cinnamon or nutmeg for topping, optional

Instructions

  • Pour apple cider or juice into a saucepan. Add cinnamon stick, cloves, star anise, and sweetener. Warm over medium heat until just simmering (about 5 minutes).
  • Remove from heat. Stir in lemon juice.
  • Strain into a mug to remove whole spices if desired.
  • Garnish with a lemon slice and a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg. Serve hot.

Notes

For deeper flavor, use apple cider instead of juice. Vegan option: use agave or maple syrup. Steep spices longer for stronger flavor. Add more lemon for brightness.
