Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Teapot or heatproof mug
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Spoon or stirrer
  • Measuring spoons
  • Measuring cup
  • Citrus juicer

Ingredients

  • 1 chai tea bag or 2 tsp loose leaf chai tea
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 1.5 oz bourbon or spiced rum
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
  • 0.5 tbsp fresh lemon juice
  • 0.25 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 stick cinnamon for garnish
  • ground cinnamon or nutmeg optional, for topping
  • lemon or orange slice optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Boil water in the saucepan. Add chai tea bag and steep for 3–5 minutes.
  • Remove the tea bag, then pour the chai into a heatproof mug.
  • Add bourbon or spiced rum, honey or maple syrup, lemon juice, and vanilla extract.
  • Stir until honey is fully dissolved and drink is well mixed.
  • Garnish with a cinnamon stick, lemon slice, or a sprinkle of cinnamon or nutmeg if desired.
  • Serve hot and enjoy while warm.

Notes

Try spiced rum for a twist or chai concentrate for stronger flavor. Adjust honey or maple syrup for sweetness. Fresh lemon juice is best, but bottled works too. For a non-alcoholic version, skip the spirits and add more chai or hot water. Add a splash of milk or almond milk for creaminess, or a pinch of cayenne for heat.
