  • 1/2 oz vanilla simple syrup see notes
  • 2 dashes angostura bitters
  • 1 strip orange peel
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract optional, for extra flavor
  • vanilla bean for garnish, optional
  • granulated sugar for garnish, optional
  • large ice cubes

Instructions

  • Drop the large ice cubes into your glass.
  • Pour in the bourbon, vanilla simple syrup, and bitters.
  • Stir with your bar spoon for about 20 seconds until nice and chilled.
  • Twist the orange peel over the drink to express the oils, then toss it in.
  • Add a little vanilla extract if desired.
  • Top with a scraped vanilla bean or a dusting of granulated sugar if you want to get fancy.

Notes

Vanilla simple syrup: Simmer equal parts water and granulated sugar until dissolved. Add a split vanilla bean and infuse 30 min, then strain. Or use a splash of vanilla extract. Rubbing orange peel on the rim or dusting with sugar adds a nice touch. Use fresh, large ice cubes for best results. Good bourbon is key for best flavor.
