Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Muddler
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Mixing spoon
  • Highball or rocks glass
  • Ice crusher or ice bag

Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup fresh blueberries frozen works in a pinch
  • 2 oz vodka, white rum, or bourbon use your preferred spirit
  • 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice or lime juice
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup or agave nectar
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves
  • club soda for topping
  • crushed ice to serve
  • mint sprig for garnish
  • extra blueberries for garnish

Instructions

  • Add the fresh blueberries and mint leaves to a cocktail shaker.
  • Muddle gently until the berries are juicy and the mint is fragrant, without shredding the leaves too much.
  • Pour in the vodka, white rum, or bourbon, along with the fresh lemon or lime juice and simple syrup or agave nectar.
  • Fill the shaker with ice and shake for about 10 seconds, until well chilled.
  • Pack a highball or rocks glass with crushed ice.
  • Strain the mixture into the prepared glass over the crushed ice. Use a fine mesh strainer if you prefer fewer fruit bits in the drink.
  • Top with club soda and give it a gentle stir with a mixing spoon to combine.
  • Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and a few extra blueberries on top. Serve immediately.

Notes

Vodka keeps the flavor clean and crisp, white rum adds a beachy, tropical note, and bourbon gives the drink a deeper, richer character—use whichever fits your mood.
For a less sweet cocktail, reduce the simple syrup or agave nectar or add an extra squeeze of citrus. For more texture and color, let a few muddled berry bits pass through into the glass.
Frozen blueberries work well—let them thaw slightly first so they release more juice and don't water down the drink as much.
To make a batch for a group, multiply the ingredients and build everything in a large pitcher, then top individual glasses with club soda just before serving.
