Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Strainer
  • Citrus juicer
  • Bar spoon
  • Chilled coupe or rocks glass

Ingredients

  • 2 oz gin dry gin with citrus notes
  • 1 oz blood orange juice freshly squeezed
  • 0.5 oz lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • 0.25 oz triple sec or orange liqueur
  • Ice fresh cubes for mixing and chilling
  • Blood orange slice or twist for garnish
  • Soda water optional splash, for a lighter drink

Instructions

  • Chill a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for about 10 minutes so the cocktail stays extra cold.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with fresh ice cubes.
  • Add the gin, fresh blood orange juice, lime juice, simple syrup, and triple sec or orange liqueur to the shaker.
  • Shake firmly for about 15 seconds, until the shaker feels frosty and the drink is well chilled.
  • Strain the cocktail into the chilled glass.
  • If you prefer something a little lighter, top with a small splash of soda water.
  • Garnish with a blood orange slice or twist on the rim and serve immediately while icy cold.

Notes

The sweetness of the drink will depend on how sweet your blood oranges are. If they are very sweet, you can reduce the simple syrup slightly for a brighter, more citrusy finish.
For a stronger gin-forward flavor, cut the simple syrup down to 1/4 oz. If you want it smoother and a bit sweeter, keep the full amount and shake well to blend the citrus and spirits.
Chilling the glass for about 10 minutes before pouring helps keep the cocktail colder, longer and really shows off that deep blood-orange color.
