Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or large mason jar with lid
  • Citrus juicer
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Tall glasses
  • Stirring spoon
  • Cutting Board
  • Sharp knife
  • Ice cube tray (for making citrus ice cubes - optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 oz fresh orange juice
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz simple syrup equal parts sugar and water, dissolved
  • 3 oz sparkling water or club soda
  • 1 tablespoon grenadine
  • Ice cubes

Garnishes:

  • Orange slice
  • Lemon wheel
  • Lime wheel
  • Maraschino cherry
  • Fresh mint leaves

The quality of fresh-squeezed citrus juices makes a noticeable difference in this recipe. Store-bought juices work in a pinch, but lack the bright flavor of fresh options.

Instructions

  • Prepare the glasses: Fill tall glasses with ice cubes. For a decorative touch, use citrus-infused ice cubes made by freezing small pieces of citrus fruit in water.
  • Mix the base: In a cocktail shaker or mason jar, combine orange juice, lemon juice, lime juice, and simple syrup.
  • Shake well: Add a few ice cubes to the shaker and shake for 15-20 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Assemble the drink: Strain the mixture into the prepared glasses filled with ice.
  • Add bubbles: Top with sparkling water or club soda.
  • Create the sunset effect: Slowly pour grenadine down the inside of the glass. It will sink to the bottom, creating a layered sunset appearance.
  • Garnish: Add citrus wheels, a maraschino cherry, and mint leaves.

Notes

This mocktail can be prepared in large batches for parties. Simply multiply the ingredients (except the sparkling water) and mix in a pitcher. Add the sparkling water just before serving to maintain carbonation.
For a sweeter version, increase the simple syrup to 1.5 oz. Those preferring a more tart drink should reduce it to 0.5 oz.
Children typically enjoy a sweeter version with more grenadine and less lime juice. The recipe works well with different fruit juices too – try adding pineapple or grapefruit juice for variation.
Store any leftover citrus juice in sealed containers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
