Equipment

  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Tall glasses for serving
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Blender (optional)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries hulled and sliced
  • 8-10 fresh basil leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 3 tablespoons fresh lime juice about 2 limes
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Strawberry slices and lime wheels for garnish

Fresh ingredients make all the difference in this recipe. Choose ripe, fragrant strawberries for the best flavor.

Instructions

  • Place strawberries, basil leaves, and honey in the bottom of your cocktail shaker or jar. Muddle gently until the strawberries release their juice and the basil becomes fragrant.
  • Add the lime juice and a handful of ice to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 20 seconds.
  • Strain the mixture into two tall glasses filled halfway with ice.
  • Top each glass with sparkling water and stir gently to combine.
  • Garnish with fresh strawberry slices, a lime wheel, and a basil leaf.

For a smoother texture, you can blend the strawberries, basil, honey, and lime juice before adding to the glasses and topping with sparkling water.

    Notes

This mocktail can be prepared up to 24 hours ahead by making the strawberry-basil base and refrigerating it. Just add the sparkling water right before serving to maintain the fizz.
For a different flavor profile, try substituting mint for basil or adding a splash of coconut water.
You can also create a frozen version by blending all ingredients with extra ice for a slushy texture.
Children especially enjoy this drink, and you can reduce the basil amount for a more kid-friendly version.
The recipe easily doubles or triples for parties or gatherings.
