Stars And Stripes Sour Cocktail Recipe

Stars and Stripes Sour Cocktail Recipe
This patriotic cocktail brings together the tartness of lemon and the sweetness of berries. Seriously refreshing for summer, and it’s a crowd-pleaser at Fourth of July celebrations.

Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Muddler
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Ice
  • Rocks glass or tumbler
  • Bar spoon
  • Small knife for cutting fruit

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon or whiskey
  • 3/4 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • 5-6 fresh blueberries
  • 2-3 fresh strawberries hulled and sliced
  • 1 egg white optional, for frothy texture
  • Ice cubes
  • Strawberry and blueberry garnish

Optional: 1/4 oz grenadine for extra color

Instructions

  • Add blueberries and strawberries to the cocktail shaker and muddle gently to get those juices flowing.
  • Pour in bourbon, lemon juice, and simple syrup.
  • If you’re using egg white, add it now.
  • Seal up the shaker and give it a good, hard shake without ice for about 15 seconds (that’s the “dry shake”).
  • Add ice to the shaker and shake again—this time for 20-30 seconds, until everything’s nice and cold.
  • Strain into a rocks glass filled with fresh ice.
  • Garnish with fresh blueberries and a strawberry slice on a cocktail pick, if you’re feeling fancy.

Notes

You can make this non-alcoholic by swapping the bourbon for apple juice or a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative. Mid-range bourbon with caramel notes works best with the berries, in my opinion.
Making drinks for a crowd? Multiply the recipe for a pitcher, but don’t add ice until you’re ready to shake and serve. It’s less messy that way.
If you make it ahead, the cocktail will keep in the fridge for up to 24 hours, though the egg white froth won’t stick around forever. Use an airtight container to keep it fresh.
