Equipment

  • Large jug or pitcher (minimum 2 liters)
  • Measuring cup
  • Long-handled spoon
  • Citrus juicer
  • Ice scoop
  • Strainer (optional)
  • Glasses or cups

Ingredients

Basic ingredient list:

  • 1 1/2 cups fresh lemon juice about 6-8 lemons
  • 1 cup simple syrup or adjust to taste
  • 2 cups vodka substitute white rum or gin
  • 4 cups cold water
  • Lemon slices and fresh mint for garnish
  • Ice cubes

Instructions

  • First, I juice the lemons and check for seeds. I pour the lemon juice into the large jug.
  • Next, I add the simple syrup and vodka. Then, I pour in the cold water and stir well with my long spoon until everything mixes.
  • I taste the mix before serving. If it’s too tart, I add a little more syrup or water.
  • I fill the jug with lots of ice cubes right before serving, so the drink stays cold but not watered down. For garnish, I add lemon slices and a few mint leaves.
  • I give the drink a final gentle stir. When ready, I pour into glasses with extra ice if needed.

Notes

I always adjust the sweetener and alcohol to suit my taste. For a lighter drink, I use less vodka.
If serving kids or guests who don’t drink alcohol, I keep a separate batch without vodka. Using fresh lemon juice really makes a big difference in flavor.
If I prepare the drink ahead, I add ice right before serving so it stays cold but doesn’t get diluted. I sometimes use flavored vodka for a twist.
Leftovers keep in the refrigerator for up to two days, but honestly, the drink tastes freshest right after mixing.
