Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or measuring tool
  • Muddler
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Rocks glass
  • Ice cube tray for large cubes
  • Cocktail pick or small skewer (for garnish)
  • Salt plate or small dish (for rimming glass)

Ingredients

  • 2 oz silver blanco tequila
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • ¾ oz agave nectar or simple syrup
  • 2-3 slices of jalapeño more or less depending on heat preference
  • 1 lime wheel for garnish
  • Kosher salt for rimming optional
  • Ice cubes for shaking
  • 1 large ice cube for serving

Fresh ingredients make a big difference in this cocktail. Always use freshly squeezed lime juice.

Instructions

  • Prepare the glass: Run a lime wedge around the rim of your rocks glass and dip in kosher salt if you like. Set the glass aside.
  • Muddle the jalapeño: Place jalapeño slices in the bottom of your cocktail shaker and gently muddle to release oils.
  • Add wet ingredients: Pour in tequila, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar.
  • Shake thoroughly: Add ice to the shaker and shake hard for 15-20 seconds until chilled.
  • Strain and serve: Double-strain into your prepared rocks glass over a large ice cube to keep out jalapeño seeds and small ice chips.
  • Garnish: Add a lime wheel and a slice of jalapeño on a cocktail pick.

Double-straining keeps the drink smooth. It removes jalapeño bits and ice shards that could water down your drink.

    Notes

You can customize the heat level. Start with one slice of jalapeño for mild spice.
For extra heat, include some seeds or use hotter peppers like serrano or habanero.
Make a spicy simple syrup by infusing your agave or simple syrup with jalapeño ahead of time. This gives a more consistent heat throughout the drink.
For a smoky variation, substitute mezcal for half or all of the tequila. This adds complexity that pairs well with the spice.
To make a pitcher version for parties, multiply the recipe by 8. Add ice just before serving to prevent dilution.
