Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Mixing spoon
  • Measuring jigger or shot glass
  • Fine strainer
  • Tall glass or mug
  • Small saucepan
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Grater or zester

Ingredients

  • 2 oz spiced rum
  • 4 oz apple cider fresh if possible
  • 0.5 oz maple syrup or brown sugar syrup
  • 1-2 dashes orange bitters or lemon bitters
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2-3 whole cloves
  • 1 star anise optional
  • ground cinnamon or nutmeg pinch
  • apple slices, orange peel, or lemon peel for garnish

Instructions

  • Pour spiced rum, apple cider, and maple syrup into your shaker or mixing glass.
  • Add bitters, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir or shake with ice (skip ice for warm version).
  • Strain into a glass or mug over fresh ice, or pour straight in if warm.
  • Drop in cinnamon stick, cloves, and star anise for extra flavor and garnish.
  • Top with apple slices, orange or lemon peel, or a dusting of cinnamon. Serve and enjoy.

Notes

Use dark rum for a richer flavor, or add a splash of hard cider for bubbles. Maple syrup or brown sugar syrup both work. For a hot version, warm cider before mixing. Stir in a small pat of unsalted butter for a hot buttered rum twist. Adjust spices and garnish to taste.
