Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk or oat milk
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened or Dutch-processed cocoa powder
  • 1 ounce dark chocolate chopped
  • 2 tablespoons chocolate syrup
  • 2 tablespoons sugar white or brown
  • 0.5 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 0.125 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 0.125 teaspoon cayenne pepper or chili powder use less for milder spice
  • pinch ginger or cardamom optional, for extra warmth
  • 0.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • whipped cream or coconut cream for topping
  • mini marshmallows optional
  • chocolate shavings or extra cinnamon for garnish
  • cinnamon sticks for stirring and garnish

Instructions

  • Pour milk into a saucepan and warm over medium heat (do not boil).
  • Add chopped chocolate, cocoa powder, sugar, and chocolate syrup. Whisk until melted and smooth.
  • Stir in cinnamon, nutmeg, cayenne or chili, and optional ginger or cardamom. Keep whisking until blended and hot.
  • Remove from heat, add vanilla extract, and adjust sweetness or spice as desired.
  • Ladle into mugs or heat-safe glasses. Top with whipped cream, marshmallows, chocolate shavings, or cinnamon stick as desired.

Notes

Use whole milk or coconut cream for extra creaminess. Adjust spices and sweetness to your liking. Oat milk makes it vegan. Set up a toppings bar for guests to customize their drinks. Freshly grated nutmeg and cinnamon make a big difference!
