Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger or shot glass
  • Highball or collins glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Citrus juicer
  • Small plate
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Ice cubes

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blanco tequila or reposado/añejo for richer flavor
  • 2 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 0.5 oz lime juice freshly squeezed
  • 0.25-0.5 oz simple syrup or agave nectar to taste
  • 2-3 oz soda water or club soda or sparkling water
  • kosher salt or coarse salt for rim
  • grapefruit soda optional, for extra sweetness
  • ice cubes
  • garnishes: grapefruit wedge, lime wheel, mint sprig, or jalapeño slice optional

Instructions

  • Run a lime wedge around the rim of a highball glass, then dip in salt to coat. Fill glass with ice.
  • In a shaker, combine tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and simple syrup. Add ice and shake for 15 seconds.
  • Strain into glass over ice. Top with soda water. Stir gently. Garnish with grapefruit, lime, mint, or jalapeño as desired.

Notes

Use fresh juice for brightest flavor. Adjust sweetness as you like. Swap soda water for grapefruit soda for a sweeter version. A salt rim is classic but optional—try it for extra contrast!
