Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or large mason jar with lid
  • Muddler (or wooden spoon as alternative)
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Measuring jigger or cups
  • Tall glasses (Collins or highball style)
  • Ice bucket
  • Bar spoon or long-handled spoon
  • Cutting board and knife
  • Pitcher (if making multiple servings)

Ingredients

For single serving:

  • 1/4 cup fresh blueberries plus extra for garnish
  • 2 oz vodka can substitute gin
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice about 1 lemon
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • 4 oz sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon wheel and mint sprig for garnish

Simple syrup recipe:

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Heat until dissolved then cool

Instructions

  • Prepare the blueberries: Toss blueberries into the shaker or jar and muddle gently. You want them crushed, but not totally pureed.
  • Add the base: Pour in vodka, lemon juice, and simple syrup. No need to overthink it.
  • Shake well: Add ice, secure the lid, and give it a good shake for 15-20 seconds. You want it nice and chilled.
  • Strain the mixture: Pour through a fine mesh strainer into an ice-filled glass, catching the blueberry pulp and seeds.
  • Add bubbles: Top with sparkling water and stir gently with a bar spoon. Don’t go wild—you want to keep the fizz.
  • Garnish: Finish with a lemon wheel, a few blueberries, and a sprig of mint if you’re feeling fancy.

Notes

Tweak the cocktail to suit your taste. Like it sweeter? Add more simple syrup.
Want more tartness? A bit of extra lemon juice does the trick.
Leftover blueberry mixture (minus the sparkling water) keeps in the fridge for up to three days if you stash it in a sealed container.
This cocktail goes really well with light snacks—think cheese plates or summer salads. It's especially good when it's hot out.
If you want a layered look, pour the blueberry mix over the back of a spoon onto the ice, then top slowly with sparkling water.
For a fun touch, freeze blueberries in ice cubes ahead of time. They look great and won't water down your drink.
