Equipment

  • Mixing glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Jigger or measuring tool
  • Nick and Nora glass or coupe glass
  • Ice for mixing

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blended Scotch whisky
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters optional
  • Brandied cherry for garnish

Instructions

  • Fill mixing glass 3/4 full with ice.
  • Add Scotch whisky, sweet vermouth, and both types of bitters to the mixing glass.
  • Stir with a bar spoon for 30 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Strain into a chilled Nick and Nora glass or coupe.
  • Garnish with a brandied cherry.

Notes

The type of Scotch makes a big difference in the final taste. A smoky Scotch creates a bolder drink, while a lighter blend keeps it mellow.
Storing vermouth in the fridge helps it stay fresh longer.
A Nick and Nora glass works best, but any small cocktail glass will do.
Pre-chilling the glass in the freezer for 5 minutes makes the drink stay cold longer.
The orange bitters add extra depth but aren't required for a traditional Rob Roy.
