Equipment

  • Mixing glass
  • Old Fashioned glass or rocks glass
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Bar spoon
  • Jigger or small measuring cup
  • Small saucepan
  • Baking sheet
  • Small bowl
  • Knife and cutting board

Ingredients

  • 2 oz tequila blanco or reposado
  • 1 oz pecan syrup homemade or store-bought
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 tbsp roasted pecans
  • 0.125 tsp ground cinnamon optional
  • pinch of salt
  • orange or lemon peel for garnish
  • ice cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread pecans on a baking sheet and roast 7-10 minutes. Cool in a bowl.
  • In a mixing glass, add roasted pecans, pecan syrup, bitters, cinnamon, and salt. Gently muddle with the back of a spoon.
  • Pour in tequila and a few ice cubes. Stir for 20-30 seconds until chilled.
  • Strain into an old fashioned glass over fresh ice.
  • Express a strip of citrus peel over the drink and drop it in as garnish. Add a few roasted pecans for aroma and crunch if desired.

Notes

Roast unsalted pecans for full flavor. To make pecan syrup: simmer equal parts sugar and water with chopped pecans for 10-15 minutes, then strain. Add cinnamon for warmth, or skip it. Serve over one big ice cube if possible for slow dilution.
