A nutty twist on the classic Old Fashioned—this cocktail pairs roasted pecans, homemade pecan syrup, bitters, and tequila for a cozy, smooth drink with rich fall flavor. Orange or lemon peel garnish adds a bright citrus finish.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread pecans on a baking sheet and roast 7-10 minutes. Cool in a bowl.
In a mixing glass, add roasted pecans, pecan syrup, bitters, cinnamon, and salt. Gently muddle with the back of a spoon.
Pour in tequila and a few ice cubes. Stir for 20-30 seconds until chilled.
Strain into an old fashioned glass over fresh ice.
Express a strip of citrus peel over the drink and drop it in as garnish. Add a few roasted pecans for aroma and crunch if desired.
Notes
Roast unsalted pecans for full flavor. To make pecan syrup: simmer equal parts sugar and water with chopped pecans for 10-15 minutes, then strain. Add cinnamon for warmth, or skip it. Serve over one big ice cube if possible for slow dilution.
