Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Jigger
  • Citrus juicer
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Margarita glass or tumbler
  • Small plate
  • Bar spoon
  • Ice

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blanco tequila silver tequila
  • 1 oz prickly pear syrup cactus fruit syrup
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz orange liqueur Cointreau or triple sec
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup or agave nectar; optional, to taste
  • ice cubes for shaking and serving
  • salt for rim
  • lime wedge for garnish

Instructions

  • Run a lime wedge around the rim of your glass, then dip the rim in salt.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker halfway with ice cubes.
  • Add tequila, prickly pear syrup, fresh lime juice, and orange liqueur to the shaker. For a sweeter drink, add simple syrup or agave.
  • Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds, until the shaker feels very cold.
  • Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice.
  • Garnish with a lime wedge or a thin slice of prickly pear.

Notes

Tequila blanco keeps the flavor bright; reposado adds subtle oak. If you can’t find prickly pear syrup, blend peeled cactus pears (tunas) with sugar and water, then strain. Chill the glass for an extra crisp sip.
