Equipment

  • Highball glass
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Bar spoon
  • Citrus juicer
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Ice bucket

Ingredients

  • 2 oz silver tequila
  • 3 oz fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz simple syrup
  • Club soda
  • Blue curaçao 1/2 oz
  • Fresh strawberries or raspberries
  • White sugar for rimming
  • Ice cubes
  • Fresh lime wedges for garnish

The quality of tequila matters significantly in this cocktail.

Instructions

  • Prepare the glass: Run a lime wedge around the rim of the highball glass, then dip in white sugar to create the white element.
  • Add the blue layer: Pour blue curaçao at the bottom of the glass.
  • Fill the glass with ice cubes.
  • Mix the base: In a shaker, combine tequila, grapefruit juice, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake well.
  • Layer carefully: Slowly pour the tequila mixture over the ice.
  • Top with club soda: Add a splash to finish.
  • Garnish: Add fresh strawberries or raspberries on top for the red element.

The layering technique creates the red, white, and blue effect.

    Notes

This cocktail can be adjusted to taste. For a less sweet version, reduce the simple syrup. Non-alcoholic versions can substitute tequila with additional grapefruit juice and a dash of salt.
Make sure all ingredients are well-chilled before mixing. Warm ingredients will cause ice to melt quickly and dilute the drink.
For best results, prepare this cocktail just before serving. The layers will eventually mix together, losing the patriotic effect.
You can prepare a large batch for parties by multiplying the recipe, but add the club soda individually to each serving to maintain the fizz.
