Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar with lid
  • Jigger or small measuring cup
  • Citrus juicer
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Small saucepan (for hibiscus syrup)
  • Bar spoon
  • Margarita glass or short tumbler
  • Plate for rimming salt
  • Knife
  • Cutting Board

Ingredients

  • 2 oz blanco tequila
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz orange juice
  • 0.5 oz orange liqueur Cointreau, Grand Marnier, or triple sec
  • 0.75 oz hibiscus syrup or hibiscus simple syrup
  • 0.25 oz simple syrup optional, to taste
  • coarse or kosher salt for rimming glass
  • dried hibiscus flowers optional, for garnish
  • ice cubes

Instructions

  • Rim a margarita glass with lime, dip in coarse/kosher salt, and fill with ice.
  • Add tequila, lime juice, orange juice, orange liqueur, and hibiscus syrup to a shaker with ice.
  • Shake firmly for about 15 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Strain into the prepared glass.
  • Taste; if desired, stir in a little simple syrup. Garnish with a dried hibiscus flower or thin orange slice.

Notes

Swap mezcal for tequila for a smoky variation. Make hibiscus syrup by steeping dried hibiscus in hot water, then mixing the tea with equal parts sugar until dissolved. For a lighter take, add a splash of soda water.
