  • Measuring jigger or tablespoon
  • Mixing spoon
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Fine strainer

Ingredients

  • 2 oz whiskey bourbon or rye
  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1 tsp honey or maple syrup, to taste
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 4 oz hot water
  • 1 slice orange for garnish, stud with cloves
  • cranberries optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Heat water in a small saucepan or kettle until hot, but not boiling.
  • Stick cloves into an orange slice.
  • Add whiskey, lemon juice, and honey (or maple syrup) to a heatproof mug.
  • Pour in hot water and stir until sweetener is dissolved.
  • Drop in clove-studded orange slice and a cinnamon stick.
  • Add cranberries for garnish if desired. Let steep for a minute before sipping.

Notes

Bourbon makes this drink smoother; rye adds spice. Always use fresh lemon juice for the best flavor. For more citrus, add a twist of lemon peel. Adjust sweetness to taste.
