Equipment

  • Rocks glass
  • Jigger
  • Bar spoon
  • Peeler or knife
  • Mixing glass (optional)
  • Strainer (optional)
  • Large ice cube mold

Ingredients

  • 2 oz bourbon whiskey or rye whiskey
  • 0.5 oz cinnamon simple syrup or plain simple syrup
  • 2 dashes aromatic bitters
  • 1 dash orange bitters
  • 1 orange peel for garnish
  • 1 cinnamon stick for garnish
  • 1 large ice cube

Instructions

  • Place large ice cube in rocks glass. Add bourbon (or rye), cinnamon simple syrup, aromatic bitters, and orange bitters.
  • Stir gently with a bar spoon for 20–30 seconds.
  • Express orange peel oils over the drink and add to glass.
  • Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

Notes

Homemade cinnamon syrup is easy: simmer equal parts sugar and water with cinnamon sticks. Bourbon brings a rounder flavor, rye is spicier. Expressing the orange peel releases essential oils for aroma.
