Equipment

  • Large saucepan or slow cooker
  • Wooden spoon
  • Ladle
  • Large pitcher or heatproof jug
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Sharp knife
  • Citrus zester or peeler (optional)
  • Serving glasses or mugs
  • Fine-mesh strainer

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle Spanish red wine 750ml, or any dry red wine
  • 0.25 cup brandy
  • 0.25 cup orange juice
  • 2-3 tbsp brown sugar or more to taste
  • 1 large orange sliced
  • 1 lemon sliced
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • 0.25 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1-2 whole cloves optional
  • 1 small apple chopped
  • 1-2 star anise optional

Instructions

  • Slice the orange and lemon into thin rounds. Chop the apple into small cubes.
  • Add wine, brandy, and orange juice to a large saucepan or slow cooker.
  • Stir in brown sugar until dissolved.
  • Add orange slices, lemon slices, and apple cubes.
  • Toss in cinnamon sticks, nutmeg, and optional spices.
  • Heat gently over low heat, keeping just below a simmer, for 20-30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  • Taste and add more brown sugar if you want it sweeter. Do not boil.
  • Remove from heat (or set slow cooker to 'warm'). Ladle through a mesh strainer into pitcher or mugs. Serve warm and enjoy.

Notes

Letting the sangria sit enhances the flavors. Serve cold by cooling and pouring over ice. Add more cinnamon or zest for extra spice or citrus. No brandy? Use another dark spirit or skip. Use ground spices only if serving right away; they can settle if kept warm for hours.
