  • Wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Ladle
  • Heatproof serving mugs or glasses
  • Paring knife

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle dry red wine 750 ml
  • 1/2 cup brandy
  • 2 oranges one sliced, one for juice
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 star anise
  • 1/2 teaspoon whole allspice
  • 1/3 cup sugar or maple syrup adjust to taste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • extra orange slices for garnish, optional
  • cinnamon sticks for garnish, optional

Instructions

  • Pour the red wine and water into the pot.
  • Add the orange slices, orange juice, cloves, cinnamon sticks, star anise, and allspice.
  • Stir in the brandy and sugar (or maple syrup).
  • Place the pot over medium-low heat and warm gently. Do not let it boil.
  • Stir often and heat for about 20–30 minutes until the flavors mix.
  • Taste and adjust sweetness.
  • Use the strainer to remove the spices and any pulp.
  • Ladle into mugs and garnish with orange slices or a cinnamon stick. Serve warm.

Notes

Do not boil the wine, or it will lose its flavor and alcohol. Add more sugar or syrup for a sweeter punch. Use fresh oranges for the brightest taste. For a non-alcoholic version, swap wine for grape juice and omit the brandy. Leftovers keep in the fridge up to two days and can be gently reheated.
