Ingredients

  • 4 cups cranberry juice
  • 2 cups apple cider
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup or honey to taste
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 2 whole star anise

Instructions

  • Pour cranberry juice and apple cider into a large pot.
  • Add maple syrup or honey, and stir to mix.
  • Add cinnamon sticks, cloves, and star anise.
  • Add orange slices and, if desired, fresh cranberries.
  • Warm over low heat until steaming, about 20 minutes. Do not boil.
  • Turn off the heat, cover, and let sit for 10 minutes for flavors to blend.
  • Strain out spices, orange slices, and cranberries.
  • Pour into mugs or pitcher and garnish as desired. Serve warm.

Notes

Use pure cranberry juice for a tart punch or cocktail-style for a sweeter drink. Whole spices are easier to remove. Sweeten to taste. Star anise is optional. Freeze leftovers in ice cube trays for a quick warm-up later.
