Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Muddler
  • Jigger or measuring cup
  • Collins glass
  • Ice crusher or Lewis bag
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Bar spoon

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Kentucky bourbon
  • 4 oz fresh lemonade
  • 8-10 fresh mint leaves
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup
  • Crushed ice
  • Fresh mint sprig for garnish
  • 1 lemon wheel for garnish

Instructions

  • Place mint leaves and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker.
  • Muddle the mint gently to release oils. Avoid over-muddling, which creates bitter flavors.
  • Add bourbon and lemonade to the shaker.
  • Fill the shaker with ice cubes and shake for 10-15 seconds.
  • Fill a Collins glass with crushed ice.
  • Strain the mixture into the glass through a fine-mesh strainer.
  • Top with more crushed ice to create a mounded effect.
  • Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and lemon wheel.

Notes

Fresh ingredients make a big difference in this drink. Use real lemons to make the lemonade instead of store-bought versions.
Keep mint leaves refrigerated and use them within 3-4 days for the best flavor.
Crushing ice properly creates the signature texture. Wrap ice in a Lewis bag and crush with a mallet, or use an ice crusher.
Choose a quality bourbon between 90-100 proof for the best taste balance.
The drink should be very cold and frosty when served. Pre-chill the glass for best results.
