Equipment

  • Blender or food processor
  • Mesh strainer
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Tall glasses (preferably chilled)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Ice cube tray
  • Cocktail shaker (optional)
  • Knife and cutting board

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh melon honeydew, cantaloupe, or watermelon, cubed
  • 10-12 fresh mint leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon honey or simple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
  • 1 cup sparkling water or club soda
  • Ice cubes
  • Melon balls or lime wheels for garnish

For best results, choose a ripe, fragrant melon.

Instructions

  • Cut the melon into 1-inch cubes and place in blender.
  • Blend until smooth, then strain through a mesh strainer into a bowl.
  • In each glass, muddle 5-6 mint leaves gently with honey or simple syrup.
  • Add ice cubes to fill glasses halfway.
  • Pour 1/4 cup melon puree into each glass.
  • Add 1 tablespoon lime juice to each glass.
  • Top with sparkling water or club soda.
  • Stir gently to combine all ingredients.
  • Garnish with a mint sprig and melon ball or lime wheel.
  • Serve immediately while fizzy and cold.

Notes

This mocktail can be prepared partially in advance. Make the melon puree up to 24 hours ahead and store it in the refrigerator in an airtight container.
For a sweeter drink, add more honey or simple syrup. For a more tart version, increase the lime juice.
Children especially enjoy this drink when made with watermelon instead of honeydew or cantaloupe.
For a special touch, freeze small melon balls to use as ice cubes. They'll keep the drink cold without diluting it and make a fun surprise at the bottom of the glass.
