Equipment

  • Bamboo whisk (chasen)
  • Small bowl
  • Measuring spoons and cups
  • Cocktail shaker or mason jar
  • Strainer
  • Tall glass
  • Citrus juicer

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon matcha powder green tea powder
  • 2 oz fresh lemon juice about half a lemon
  • 1-2 teaspoons honey or simple syrup to taste
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 0.5 cup ice cubes plus extra for serving
  • lime juice optional, splash for extra tartness
  • pinch of stevia optional, for extra sweetness
  • thin lemon or lime slice for garnish

Instructions

  • Sift the matcha powder into a small bowl to remove clumps.
  • Add 2 tablespoons of hot water (not boiling) and whisk with a bamboo whisk until smooth and frothy.
  • Stir in the honey until fully dissolved.
  • Pour the lemon juice and cold water into a cocktail shaker.
  • Add the whisked matcha mixture and a handful of ice cubes to the shaker.
  • Shake for 15–20 seconds until chilled.
  • Strain into a tall glass filled with fresh ice.
  • Garnish with a thin slice of lemon or lime. Serve immediately.

Notes

Hot water helps the matcha dissolve before adding cold water and ice. Adjust honey/lemon to taste: more honey for green tea lemonade, more lemon for tang. Try sparkling water instead of still for fizz, or batch the matcha, honey, and lemon juice ahead to serve over ice at parties. A sprig of mint or a splash of lime can add an extra refreshing twist!
