Equipment

  • Cocktail shaker
  • Hawthorne strainer
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Jigger or measuring tool
  • Citrus juicer
  • Margarita glass or coupe glass

Ingredients

  • 2 oz 60ml 100% blue agave tequila
  • 1 oz 30ml fresh lime juice
  • 1 oz 30ml triple sec or Cointreau
  • Salt for rim optional
  • Ice cubes for shaking
  • Lime wheel for garnish

Instructions

  • If desired, rim a margarita glass with salt. Rub a lime wedge around the rim and dip in salt.
  • Add tequila, lime juice, and triple sec to the cocktail shaker.
  • Fill the shaker ¾ full with ice cubes.
  • Shake vigorously for 10-15 seconds until well chilled.
  • Double strain through both strainers into the prepared glass.
  • Garnish with a lime wheel.

Notes

Fresh lime juice makes a big difference. Avoid bottled lime juice for the best taste.
Store tequila and triple sec at room temperature. They mix better this way.
The recipe can be doubled or tripled for a group. Just maintain the same ratios.
For a frozen version, blend the ingredients with 1 cup of ice until smooth.
Salt on the rim is traditional but optional. Some prefer sugar or tajin seasoning instead.
