This maple walnut old fashioned is a rich, nutty riff on the classic cocktail. Maple syrup replaces sugar for a smooth, cozy sweetness, while walnut bitters add depth and a hint of earthiness. Perfect for fall, winter, or any time you want a comforting whiskey sipper.
Pour bourbon, maple syrup, and bitters into a mixing glass.
Add enough ice to fill the glass and stir for 20–30 seconds until chilled.
Place a large ice cube in a rocks glass and strain the drink over the ice.
Express an orange peel over the drink to release oils, then garnish with the peel.
Notes
Always use pure maple syrup, not pancake syrup. Walnut bitters bring subtle nuttiness and depth. Rye makes it spicier, bourbon is smoother. Big ice cubes keep your drink colder longer without watering it down.
