Equipment

  • Mixing glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Strainer
  • Jigger
  • Rocks glass
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Fine-mesh strainer

Ingredients

  • 2 oz rye whiskey or bourbon
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth
  • 1/4 oz pure maple syrup not pancake syrup
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 dash walnut bitters optional
  • ice for mixing and serving
  • maraschino cherry for garnish

Instructions

  • Add ice to a mixing glass, filling it halfway.
  • Pour in rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and maple syrup.
  • Add bitters (Angostura and walnut, if using) to the mixture.
  • Use the bar spoon to stir the ingredients for about 30 seconds until well-chilled.
  • Strain the mixture into a rocks glass with fresh ice or a large ice cube.
  • Garnish with a maraschino cherry on top before serving.

Notes

Use pure maple syrup for best flavor. Try bourbon for a softer profile. Add orange peel for aroma, or a splash of club soda for a lighter drink (not traditional). If you don’t have walnut bitters, just use Angostura. Stirring instead of shaking keeps the drink clear and smooth.
