Equipment

  • Muddler
  • Cocktail shaker
  • Old Fashioned glass or rocks glass
  • Bar spoon
  • Strainer
  • Measuring jigger
  • Ice

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Malibu rum or bourbon for a twist
  • 4-5 fresh blackberries frozen works in a pinch
  • 6-8 fresh mint leaves or basil for a twist
  • 1 oz fresh lime juice
  • 0.5 oz simple syrup
  • club soda or ginger beer for topping
  • ice cubes
  • extra blackberries, raspberries, or mint sprig for garnish

Instructions

  • Add blackberries and mint leaves to your glass or shaker and muddle gently to release juices and oils.
  • Pour in Malibu rum, lime juice, and simple syrup.
  • Add ice to the shaker and shake until cold.
  • Strain into an old fashioned or rocks glass filled with ice.
  • Top with a splash of club soda or ginger beer.
  • Stir lightly with a bar spoon and garnish with mint, basil, or berries as desired.

Notes

Try bourbon instead of rum for a richer, whiskey-forward flavor. Fresh blackberries are best, but frozen will work in a pinch. Basil gives a softer herbal note if you want to swap out the mint. Adjust the sweetness to taste, and try ginger beer for a spicier kick.
