Equipment

  • Blender
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Citrus juicer or reamer
  • Zester or fine grater
  • Glasses for serving (preferably chilled)
  • Ice cube trays
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Straws (optional)
  • Cocktail garnish picks (optional)

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ice cubes
  • 1 cup fresh orange juice about 3-4 oranges
  • ¼ cup fresh lime juice about 2-3 limes
  • 2 tablespoons honey or agave syrup
  • 1 teaspoon lime zest
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • ½ cup sparkling water or club soda
  • Mint leaves for garnish
  • Orange and lime slices for garnish

Fresh juice is strongly recommended over bottled for the best flavor. The zest adds an aromatic citrus oil that enhances the drink considerably

Instructions

  • Chill the glasses in the freezer for about 15 minutes before making the mocktail.
  • Wash the oranges and limes thoroughly, then zest them before juicing.
  • Juice the oranges and limes, straining out any seeds or pulp as desired.
  • Add the ice, orange juice, lime juice, sweetener, and zests to the blender.
  • Blend on high speed until the mixture becomes slushy but not completely liquid, about 30-45 seconds.
  • Pour the frosty mixture into the chilled glasses, filling them about ¾ full.
  • Top each glass with sparkling water and stir gently.
  • Garnish with mint leaves and citrus slices before serving immediately.

This mocktail is best enjoyed right after making it, as the icy texture will melt quickly.

    Notes

The recipe makes about 4 servings, depending on glass size. For a smoother texture, freeze some of the orange juice in ice cube trays beforehand and use those instead of regular ice cubes.
For a more sophisticated flavor, add a dash of orange blossom water or a few drops of vanilla extract. Kids especially enjoy this with a splash of grenadine for a sunset effect.
To make this ahead of time, blend everything except the sparkling water and keep it frozen. Blend again briefly when ready to serve, then add the sparkling water.
For a non-blended version, simply shake the juices and sweetener with ice in a cocktail shaker, strain into a glass with fresh ice, and top with sparkling water.
