Equipment

  • Large pitcher or mixing glass
  • Muddler or wooden spoon
  • Fine-mesh strainer
  • Ice cube tray
  • Tall glasses
  • Citrus juicer
  • Measuring cups and spoons

Ingredients

  • 6-8 fresh basil leaves plus extra for garnish
  • 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice about 4 lemons
  • 1/4 cup simple syrup
  • 2 cups sparkling water
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slices for garnish

Instructions

  • Gently wash the basil leaves and pat them dry.
  • Add basil leaves and simple syrup to the pitcher. Muddle the leaves to release their oils.
  • Pour in the fresh lemon juice and stir to combine.
  • Fill serving glasses with ice cubes.
  • Strain the mixture into the glasses, filling them halfway.
  • Top each glass with sparkling water and stir gently.
  • Garnish with fresh basil leaves and lemon slices.

Notes

Store any leftover mixture without sparkling water in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
For a stronger basil flavor, let the leaves steep in the simple syrup for 30 minutes before mixing.
Replace regular ice cubes with frozen basil-infused ice cubes to prevent dilution.
Make simple syrup by heating equal parts water and sugar until dissolved, then cool completely before using.
